I’m now enjoying vintage textiles because I like layers and textures, and creating a story board with each piece.
I would say that my dress, book and lampshade art is inspired by the Victorian era, and is joyful, fun, theatrical, shabby chic and vintage!
My home and my art and my garden come from the same canvas… Which is me., so they over lap one another in a familiar way, creating one picture so to speak.
I’ve always loved collage, as its coming from the unconscious. Collage’s are a letter from your soul to yourself, and when you finish the picture you can suddenly see it’s telling you something very profound.
I also do heirlooms for peoples children – putting photographs and words on fabric and in the same way that I collage a dress, I collage a little story around the image which is all with fabric and layers, and hangs in a white, wooden shabby chic frame.
I sold one of these heirloom pieces to the film director Toby Hoffman, two book arts and an altered dress art to Helena Bonham Carter. Likewise, Martin and Shirlie Kemp. My audience veers towards the theatrical clientele.
I have worked in glass, metals and canvases. I’m always evolving and stretching myself in new ways in the creative world. I achieved a BA Honours in fine art in my later years.
Due to being widowed at 29, I turned to my home for solace, like a haven or sanctuary. It’s my inner world and it gives me great comfort. When people come to my home, they are in awe because it is expressive and zany!
The garden is also very magical, so I now try and use this artistic talent that has developed through sad circumstances to pass on a small part of what I have discovered and enjoyed, which has given me so much joy. I have a love affair with my art, and I pass that on to the person who is buying my work! I work from my heart rather than my head.
Each piece is eclectic, I’ve sourced the materials and objects from around the world so that the items on any one piece may have come from as many as seven countries! They are truly individual and one off pieces.
I am well travelled, which makes you step outside the little box your in ,and opens your mind to new cultures, ways of living and influenes. I’m more aware now, of the terrible plight that children have in the world through slavery, starvation and abuse. What travel gives you is wonderful visiual images of landscapes, architecture and art. I’m passionate about the things that concern me, and frustrated that I can’t do a lot about it.
I like to share what I’ve learnt, or discovered in a beautiful place for example. I love animals, and I love rescuing animals.
I use vinage gloves, christening hats, roses, script, photographic transfers, vintage shoes and hats. Each piece is a feast for the eyes and made with love!
I do book art in the same way, and again I can do personal heirloom books. These takes months to do. Theres a lot of love and humor in my work because I enjoy creating what I’m making.
My art sells at a shop in Missenden called Fair Lilley, and in Falmouth, Cornwall at a shop called Sweet Pea and Betty.
I do a few fairs and have exhibited in Wales and Buckinghamshire many times. I also do open studio for two weeks a year. People come by appointment and I do comissions.
